The actor takes on the role of Bond's quartermaster in Skyfall, playing a version of the character he has described as "slicker" than those played by actors including Alec McCowen and John Cleese.
"I'm so much younger than the character has been traditionally played, he had to be real as a young man," Whishaw told Digital Spy, before going on to liken his Q to Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.
"I think the writers did a brilliant job of finding this Mark Zuckerberg, computer hacker, genius person who feels sort of familiar to us now in our culture. That's where so much of our lives happen now, on the internet and cyberspace.
"It felt great to reinvent the character in that place."
A clip showing Bond and Q's first meeting was released online earlier this week.
