The US release date for the eleventh Star Trek has been confirmed as Christmas Day 2008.
The announcement made by Paramount Pictures was accompanied by another confirming that JJ Abrams, the creator of Lost, will direct the film.
The film will focus on the early lives of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock and, although no one has as yet been cast, filming is scheduled to begin in the autumn.
Abrams said, "Needless to say I am honoured and excited to be part of this next chapter of Star Trek."
He went on to say that his artistic intention was to appeal to everyone by making "a picture for life-long fans and the uninitiated".
