The third instalment of the Ghostbusters franchise was reportedly slated to begin production next summer with Ivan Reitman directing the project.
The project is being backed by Sony Pictures, which is currently suffering from financial troubles.
Sony's income problems have pushed the studio's final decision on Ghostbusters 3 until the end of March 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ghostbusters 3 is now likely to go into production next autumn at the very earliest.
Tropic Thunder screenwriter Etan Cohen is believed to be currently working on the Ghostbusters 3 script. Bill Murray will likely not be involved with Ghostbusters 3, but Dan Aykroyd is to reprise his role as Dr Ray Stantz.
The delay in filming will reportedly see Ghostbusters 3 released in cinemas in 2014, which will mark the franchise's 30th anniversary.
The original Ghostbusters film made more than $290 million (£179.5m) worldwide.
