"I have no intention of doing work, here-on-out, that doesn't take that same type of devotion and that same type of care," he said of the film and his stage performance in If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet.
The actor will next appear in An Enemy and alongside Viola Davis and Hugh Jackman in Prisoners.
A spoof Twitter account endorsed Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney last month on Gyllenhaal's behalf before being revealed as a fake and suspended.
End of Watch debuted in the US in September and will arrive in the UK on November 23.
