Bryan Singer, who recently took up the director's chair following the departure of Matthew Vaughn, confirmed over Twitter that pre-production on the movie is already underway.

"Well here goes. Beginning full prep on X-Men: Days of Future Past. Very excited," he wrote.

Vaughn helmed the film's predecessor, X-Men: First Class, but dropped out of the upcoming instalment, sparking rumours he was in talks to direct Star Wars: Episode 7 for Disney.

It has since emerged that he departed the X-Men sequel to work on The Secret Service, an adaptation of a Mark Millar comic, but the Star Wars rumours persist.

X-Men: Days of Future Past, starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence, is scheduled for a July 18, 2014 release date.
