JJ Abrams: 'I'd prefer to watch Star Wars Episode 7 as a fan'

By
JJ Abrams has appeared to rule himself out of directing Star Wars Episode 7.

The Star Trek filmmaker, who was recently named as a potential Episode 7 director alongside Steven Spielberg and Brad Bird, told Hollywood Life that helming the sequel would be a "burden" considering how much of a fan he is.

"Star Wars is one of my favourite movies of all time," Abrams said.

"I frankly feel that - I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series."

Abrams added: "I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn't have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!"

George Lucas's Indiana Jones partner Steven Spielberg recently ruled himself out of making the latest Star Wars.

X-Men: First Class's Matthew Vaughn and Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow have also been rumoured for the job.
