'Star Trek Into Darkness' footage to screen before 'Hobbit' in IMAX 3D

The first nine minutes of the upcoming Star Trek sequel will be shown before The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at select IMAX 3D screens, it has been announced.

The eagerly-awaited follow-up, called Star Trek Into Darkness, will star Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Karl Urban and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Paramount has revealed that the opening minutes of the movie will be screened in IMAX 3D on 500 screens worldwide in front of the Peter Jackson fantasy in December.

Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment, said of the footage in a statement: "Our longtime partners JJ Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park - the footage is absolutely incredible.

"Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike.

"We're thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended 'first look' at this highly-anticipated summer blockbuster."

The exclusive footage is scheduled to screen from December 14, when The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is released.

Star Trek Into Darkness will be released in full on May 14, 2013.
