Universal Pictures' Asteroids adaptation has appointed a new screenwriter.

Fair Game scribe Doug Liman will pen the video game adaptation for the studio, according to Variety.

Asteroids was released onto arcades by Atari in 1979 and went on to become one of the most popular and influential games of its generation.

Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is overseeing the development of the project, which received earlier screenplay drafts from Matt Lopez and Evan Spiliotopoulos.

Asteroids is one of several video game adaptations to have moved ahead lately, with movies based on Deus Ex, Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell all moving forward.

The Asteroids film has been in the works since 2009.
