'Twilight Breaking Dawn - Part 2' expected to open with $135m weekend

Twilight Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has enjoyed the biggest midnight opening of all four films in the series.

The final instalment in the saga took in an estimated $30.4m (£19.1m) from Thursday night and midnight shows in North America, beating the previous film's total of $30.3m.

According to boxoffice.com, the midnight record stands at $43.5m and is held by 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

The official Friday estimate for Breaking Dawn - Part 2 is $71.2m. Summit estimates that total takings will be "in the range of $135m" for the whole weekend.

$71.2m represents the sixth highest opening day of all time, although the concluding part of the series still ranks behind Breaking Dawn - Part 1 ($71.6m) and New Moon ($72.7m).
