The talk saw the 69-year-old revisit his most famous roles, discuss some of his notable collaborators and offer advice to aspiring film-makers.

When asked whether he has any plans to retire, De Niro replied: "I don't see myself stopping really at this point," to a huge round of applause from the audience.

He then cited Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Silver Linings Playbook co-star Bradley Cooper as younger actors whose work he currently admires.

De Niro, who will soon be seen in Luc Besson's mafia action movie Malavita, was then quizzed on the difference between studio and independent films, having worked extensively in both disciplines: "Independent filmmaking is just as hard as making studio films.

"You'll always have people breathing down your neck as it's always expensive to make a film. You have to deal with the stakeholders and it's a process. The higher the budget, the higher the pressure. But it is what it is."

De Niro's other Silver Linings Playbook co-star Jennifer Lawrence recently said that the actor wasn't an intimidating presence on set despite his legendary status.
