Jennifer Lawrence has admitted that she was intimidated to star in The Hunger Games.

The actress revealed to USA Today that she initially was unsure if she could handle the pressure of playing Katniss Everdeen.

"It's so huge. It's why I almost didn't take the movie," Lawrence told the newspaper. "It's a character that can very easily overpower the rest of my characters.

"I don't want to do something that's kind of similar. I haven't really done that many movies."

Lawrence went on to reveal that she was ultimately touched to have earned the acceptance of The Hunger Games' loyal fans.

"It's such an awesome thing to be part of something that speaks to so many young kids about something that actually matters, about what one young person can actually do," the star explained.

"I feel like I'm part of an important message and that feels good. It feels nice."

Lawrence is now filming the franchise's next instalment The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which is released in November 2013.
