Sir Michael Caine, Dame Helen Mirren and last year's winner Sir Kenneth Branagh have been among previous recipients of the award.

Gambon will be handed the 'Richard Harris Award' for his "outstanding contribution" to British film.

The actor famously took over Harris's role of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films from 2004, following the death of Harris in 2002.

The 'Richard Harris Award' was created 10 years ago to honour the late Irish actor, with previous winners including Bob Hoskins, Daniel Day-Lewis and Helena Bonham Carter.

Gambon is currently starring in West End play All That Fall at London's Arts Theatre. He also appears in Dustin Hoffman's Quartet, which is released in the UK in January.

The 15th annual Mo√ęt British Independent Film Awards will be held on December 9 in London.

Tim Roth movie Broken leads the nominations, being recognised in nine categories.
