Director Julien Temple has named the Fly Away singer as his first choice to portray the musician in the upcoming film, according to the London Evening Standard.
The film will explore the latter years of Gaye's career, detailing his battle with alcoholism and the recording of the Midnight Love album, which includes the classic track 'Sexual Healing'.
Kravitz has dabbled in acting on numerous occasions, most recently playing Cinna in The Hunger Games, a role he will revisit in the forthcoming sequel Catching Fire.
His other movie roles include a cameo appearance in Precious and a part in Lee Daniels's The Butler.
Temple is currently seeking financing for the project.
