The new images showcase several characters who have not been seen in many images thus far, including Cate Blanchett's elf queen Galadriel and Christopher Lee's wizard Saruman.
Saruman was a villain in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but The Hobbit films are set several decades prior and feature him as a powerful and wise wizard, and a high-ranking opponent to the dark lord Sauron.
Andy Serkis's Gollum, Martin Freeman's Bilbo and Ian McKellen's Gandalf also appear in the new images.
Blanchett spoke about the experience of reprising her role, describing Galadriel as "mythic and fascinating".
Writer Philippa Boyens has explained the decision to make a trilogy of films rather than two as was originally planned, a move which Freeman described as "unexpected".
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will be released on December 13 in the UK, and December 14 in the US.
