'Dark Knight Rises', 'Skyfall', 'Hobbit', 'Avengers' for VFX Oscar

A ten-film shortlist for the Visual Effects Academy Award has been revealed.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the shortlist today, which includes four of the five highest-grossing films of the year in The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-Man and Skyfall.

Also included on the list are Snow White and the Huntsman, John Carter, Cloud Atlas, Life of Pi, Prometheus and the yet-to be released The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on January 3.

After the screenings, the shortlist will be narrowed down to five. Last year, the award was picked up by Martin Scorsese's Hugo.

The 85th Academy Awards will take place on February 24, 2013.
