Three actresses have been lined up to compete for the part, according to Variety.
Irish actress Saoirse Ronan (Atonement), up-and-coming Swedish star Alicia Vikander (Anna Karenina) and British actress Gabriella Wilde (The Three Musketeers) are all rumoured to be in contention for the role of the fairytale heroine.
Ronan has been in demand since playing Briony in 2007's Atonement and took the lead role in horror film Hanna in 2011.
Vikander was recently named as one of Variety's 10 Actors to Watch based on her performance as Princess Kitty in Anna Karenina.
Wilde is fresh out of filming Sony/MGM's Carrie remake, playing the part of Sue Snell. She is also a model and has featured in Vogue and InStyle magazines.
