JJ Abrams' sequel to his 2009 reboot sees Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto reprise their roles as Captain James Kirk and Spock.
Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and John Cho also return from the first film, while Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve join the cast.
The first plot synopsis for the film was released last week, and hinted that the film will see Kirk leading a man-hunt for Cumberbatch's villain - described as "a one-man weapon of mass destruction".
"As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew," the summary continues.
"When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis."
The trailer for Star Trek: Into Darkness will debut with screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.
Star Trek (2009) screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman collaborated with Prometheus scribe Damon Lindelof on the sequel's script.
