Rick McCallum officially leaves Lucasfilm

By
Rick McCallum is to leave Lucasfilm and focus on independent movies.

McCallum's future plans were set out in a post on official Star Wars website starwars.com. He first collaborated with George Lucas on The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles in 1992, and went on to work on the Star Wars Special Edition trilogy, plus Star Wars prequel movies The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.

"Rick is a close friend as well as an extremely talented producer," said George Lucas. "No matter how impossible I made the task, Rick was able to overcome the challenges."

Reflecting on their work together, Lucas continued: "In addition to putting together great crews and working miracles with the budget, he was instrumental in helping push filmmaking into the 21st century. He has a larger-than-life personality, and made this amazing 20-year journey with him a fun one."

McCallum, who also joined forces with Lucas on Red Tails, said: "Thank you for being so welcoming, supportive, and so good to me. You [Star Wars fans] all made it the most worthwhile and amazing experience.

"I have nothing but the biggest faith and trust that where Kathleen [Kennedy] is going to take Star Wars will be a bold, exciting, and daring future that will be worthy of all your incredible passion and loyalty for all these years. It will be awesome."

McCallum also described Kennedy as "truly one of the greatest producers in America as well as being a great friend", and added that in terms of the forthcoming Star Wars movies, he feels "there's no-one more suited who is able to bridge the worlds of elite filmmaking within a studio context".

Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney in October, with Star Wars: Episode VII mooted for release in 2015.
