"There's noise with the internet of things that are true and not true," he told MTV. "If I listen to all of it, I'd go slightly insane."

Redmayne was also linked with the role of Harry Osborn in the Amazing Spider-Man sequel, a part which was recently secured by Chronicle star Dane DeHaan.

He added: "I love those films when they're done well. I loved watching Andrew [Garfield] and Emma [Stone] in Spider-Man. I loved watching The Dark Knight Rises. There seems to be an audience now needing satisfaction beyond spectacle.

"From an actor's point of view, that makes it intriguing. I love going to see those films. I also like to shake it up - I just did a musical. I don't like sitting in a box."

Guardians of the Galaxy is scheduled to debut on August 1, 2014.
