'Star Trek Into Darkness' trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch wreaks havoc

By
The first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness has been released.

"You think your world is safe," Benedict Cumberbatch's villain intones in voiceover, "but this is an illusion."

The footage shows Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew watching in horror as the Earth is progressively destroyed, and offers a few glimpses of second new cast member Alice Eve.

JJ Abrams's sequel to his 2009 reboot Star Trek will see Kirk & co returning home to defend the planet from "a one-man weapon of mass destruction".

Kirk, alongside characters such as Zachary Quinto's Spock, Karl Urban's Bones and Zoe Saldana's Uhura, will be drawn into a manhunt in what's described as "a war-zone world".

"As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew," reads an extract from the film's first plot synopsis.

Anton Yelchin, John Cho and Simon Pegg will also reprise their roles from Star Trek.

The first poster for Star Trek Into Darkness was released earlier this week, and appears to show Cumberbatch's mysterious antagonist surveying a destroyed city that resembles London.
