Universal Pictures' new Scarface remake will be based around Mexican drug cartels.

The third version of the classic crime film will recast Al Pacino's Tony Montana as a Mexican immigrant, reports Latino Review.

The original 1932 film was centred around Italian mobsters. In Brian De Palma and Oliver Stone's 1983 remake, Pacino's character was a Cuban immigrant.

The new film has been said to be based on elements from the previous outings, but will apparently be neither a sequel nor a remake.

End of Watch writer David Ayer was hired to pen the first draft of the script, with Donnie Brasco's Paul Attanasio later brought in to work on a new screenplay.

A lead has yet to be cast for the upcoming Scarface film.
