Tom Cruise stands amongst New York ruins in new 'Oblivion' poster

By
The first poster for Tom Cruise's forthcoming sci-fi blockbuster Oblivion has been released.

The image shows Cruise stood beside a futuristic aircraft as he gazes up at the Empire State building. Instead of being surrounded by Manhattan's bustling streets, the skyscraper now stands amongst the ruins of New York City at the edge of a sheer cliff face, with water cascading down hundreds of feet below.

The poster - via IGN - is accompanied by the tagline "Earth is a memory worth fighting for".

The film - first written as a graphic novel and now directed by Joseph Kosinski (Tron: Legacy) - also stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Melissa Leo.

The movie takes place on a future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition.

According to the film's official synopsis, the plot follows "one man's confrontation with the past [that] will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind".

It continues: "Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack's mission is nearly complete.

"Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands."

The film was shot across the US - including downtown New York City - and in Iceland in digital 4K resolution. The first trailer for the feature is due to debut on iTunes this Sunday (December 9).

Oblivion is scheduled to open exclusively in IMAX cinemas on April 12, 2013 and will then receive a wide release on April 19, 2013.
