The first movie in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy took $643,000 (£398,657) on Wednesday (December 12), The Hollywood Reporter claims.
The official figures are not expected to be released until later on Thursday, according to the New Zealand Herald.
If confirmed, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey will have set a new national box office record for a non-holiday opening.
The Hobbit movies, like Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, were filmed in New Zealand, and An Unexpected Journey received its world premiere at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington last month.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens in UK cinemas today (Thursday, December 13) and in US cinemas on Friday (December 14).
