Ben Affleck on career slump: 'I was the guy to loathe'

By
Ben Affleck has opened up about the lowest point of his career following his split from Jennifer Lopez.

The Academy Award winner was the object of ridicule in the press for much of 2003 and 2004, amid the box office and critical failure of the couple's film Gigli.

Affleck described that period of his life as demoralizing in a new interview with GQ

"At the time, I knew on some level, 'This is insane'," he recalled.

"What was that guy's name who killed his wife and dumped her off the side of a boat? Peterson. I remember thinking he actually gets slightly better treatment than I do in the press. At least they had to say 'alleged killer'."

Affleck went on to suggest that there has been a growing trend in the media of personally attacking celebrities in recent years.

"Unfortunately there's an aspect of that that's like one of those fights you see on YouTube where one of them falls down and then a bunch of people who were standing around come over and kick the person," he said.

Affleck continued: "They don't know them, they have no involvement in the fight, but they recognise a moment that they can get a free shot in, and for some people it's just too much to resist.

"And that was definitely me at that point. I was the guy. I was the designated person to loathe."

Affleck previously described his time with Lopez as his "annus horribilis".

"I made a bunch of movies that didn't work. I was ending up in the tabloids. I don't know what the lesson is, except that you just have to find your compass," he said.

The director is currently married to Jennifer Garner, with whom he has three children.

He has also experienced a career revival as a director, having earned multiple Golden Globe nominations for his hit film Argo.
