His current film, Life of Pi, features several daring visual effects, including a tiger created through CGI technology. Lee recently described the film as the hardest thing he's ever done.

The 58-year-old is to be given the Visionary Award at a special ceremony in Los Angeles on February 5.

Visual effects consultant and producer Jeff Okun said of the upcoming honour: "[Lee] pushed the envelope of creation of visual effects for telling a story. In our generation, only Star Wars did that."

Inception director Christopher Nolan received the award last year.
