Behind the Candelabra was rejected by the Hollywood studios for being "too gay", director Steven Soderbergh has claimed.

The Michael Douglas and Matt Damon-starring Liberace biopic will air on HBO after it failed to get funding from a major studio.

"Nobody would make it," Soderbergh told TheWrap. "We went to everybody in town. We needed $5 million. Nobody would do it.

"They said it was too gay. Everybody. This was after Brokeback Mountain, by the way. Which is not as funny as this movie. I was stunned. It made no sense to any of us."

The film centres around the tragic relationship between the performer (Douglas) and his lover Scott Thorson (Damon).

Damon has said that his co-star is a "wonderful kisser".

Behind the Candelabra will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
