'The Hobbit' stays top of Australian box office

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has held its place at the top of the Australian box office standings.

The first movie in Peter Jackson's movie trilogy was the first chart-topper of 2013, having taken almost AU$17 million in the week between Christmas and New Year alone. This weekend, it earned a further AU$5.85 million to cement its place at the top of the standings.


Life of Pi climbs three places to take second place with receipts of just under AU$5 million.

There is just one new entry in this week's top ten in the form of Tom Cruise action thriller Jack Reacher, which opens with takings of AU$2.94 million across 226 screens.

The box office top ten for the weekend of January 3 to January 6, 2013 (all figures in Australian dollars):
