The former Law & Order: SVU actor will be playing a lead role of a cop in the graphic novel sequel directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, reports Deadline.
Josh Brolin is also said to be on the directors' wishlist for the project along with several actors from the original cast.
Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Jaime King and Rosario Dawson are among the cast members who will return for the new movie, while Jamie Chung will replace Devon Aoki.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was recently announced as one of the film's leading stars. He will play Johnny, a role which was once linked with Johnny Depp.
Talking about the role, Gordon-Levitt said in a statement: "I love how the first movie uses VFX, not to make fake things look real, but to create a heightened world unburdened by the look and feel of reality. Plus, nobody makes a badass like Mr Rodriguez."
Christopher Meloni - who appeared in HBO's True Blood last year - recently said he was open to returning to Law & Order: SVU in the future.
