Emma Stone on 'Gangster Squad': 'This film was a no-brainer for me'

Emma Stone has said she had no hesitation about starring in the violent crime film Gangster Squad.

Gangster Squad is director Ruben Fleischer's movie about the LAPD attempting to break up organised crime in the 1940s.

In an interview with Flicks and Bits, Stone revealed that she was anxious to work with Fleischer after their previous success with Zomebieland.

"We sat down and talked about the story and the character, and I said, 'Of course, let's do this together'," she recalled. "I love Ruben, he's so enthusiastic and his shots are so beautiful."

She went on to suggest that the gangster movie genre was particularly appealing, since there are far fewer of those films than in the past.

Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin hunt down Sean Penn's ruthless gangster Mickey Cohen in 'Gangster Squad'.

"I think gangster movies and movies set in the '40s in general really represent the golden age of Hollywood, you know?" she said. "When women really looked like women and men really looked like men. There's something so romantic and smoky and nostalgic about this whole time period.

"And I loved the intense action and suspense. I immediately felt that I knew what it must have been like to be a part of that place and time. It was amazing being on these sets, really feeling like a part of this world in 1949.

"I love watching movies from the '30s and '40s and the golden age of Hollywood, and I think everyone involved in the movie felt the same way."

Stone previously disclosed that she greatly enjoyed the flirtation between her femme fatale Grace and Ryan Gosling's detective Sgt Jerry Wooters.

"I'm the luckiest girl in the world because of Wooters being played by Ryan. That was a huge asset because he's so fantastic at that kind of banter we share in the film, plus we get along really well," she declared.

Gangster Squad is now playing in the US and the UK.
