Reuniting with Drive helmer Nicolas Winding Refn, Gosling plays the owner of a Thai boxing club, forced by his overbearing mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) to take vengeance on his brother's murderer.
"[Nicolas] had an actor that was gonna be in that film, and the actor had to do another film, so I said 'OK I'll do it'," Gosling explained to Digital Spy. "And he said 'OK, but you have to learn Muay Thai (a Thai combat sport similar to kickboxing)'."
In the video, Gosling goes on to discuss the changes he and Winding Refn made to the plot once he arrived in Thailand.
The first teaser for Only God Forgives was released last week, while images of a bruised and bloodied Gosling in the film emerged last year.
