One in ten lie about seeing films

'The Da Vinci Code'

One in ten people claim to have watched films when they have not, a survey has revealed.

Some 10% of people admitted to lying about what films they have seen to look clever, while one in seven confessed to mentioning a movie to impress others, or "film dropping".

The study, carried out by myfilms.com, found men are 17% more likely than women to make false claims.

Favourite movies in the category "films people haven't got round to watching but claim they have" were Schindler's List, The Da Vinci Code and The Godfather. Those most likely to be dropped into conversation for popularity were The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.

People also confessed to pretending they had not seen films that they were ashamed of - with Ghost, The Sound Of Music and Dirty Dancing topping that list.

Sam Toy, from Empire film magazine, commented: "I don't think anyone can honestly say Ghost is a great film but it is a favourite film. It's the same with Dirty Dancing. They are films which people love."

Some 23% of respondents said they judged people on what films they like and two-fifths admitted to criticising others for their film taste.
