MTV reports that Franco confirmed his involvement in the adaptation and that he would both star and direct.

However, he further claimed that the deal is "not all put together yet", and production is still in very early stages.

Bruce Willis and Tom Hanks have both previously attempted to adapt the novel before as a television miniseries, only for the projects to fizzle out.

Franco will next be seen in Sam Raimi fantasy Oz: The Great and the Powerful.

He also recently confirmed a role in the upcoming Manson family biopic Beautiful People.
