Benedict Cumberbatch goes blonde to play Julian Assange: first picture

The first official picture from the upcoming WikiLeaks movie The Fifth Estate has been released.

Benedict Cumberbatch stars as Julian Assange in the film, which charts the rise of the controversial whistle-blowing website.

The Sherlock actor appears in the new photo alongside Inglourious Basterds' Daniel Brühl, who plays Assange's business associate Daniel Domscheit-Berg.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn director Bill Condon will helm the DreamWorks Studios film, which also stars Mystic River's Laura Linney and Downton Abbey's Dan Stevens.

Anthony Mackie, David Thewlis, Peter Capaldi, Alicia Vikander and Carice van Houten round out the cast.

The film is based on Domscheit-Berg's Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange at the World's Most Dangerous Website, as well as WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy by journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding.

The Fifth Estate is due in US cinemas on November 15, while a UK release date has yet to be announced.

Cumberbatch will next be seen in the upcoming sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness. Watch a trailer for the film below:
