Nominees have been announced for the 60th Cannes Film Festival.

Among those competing for the coveted Palme d'Or award will be Quentin Tarantino whose Death Proof, half of double-bill Grindhouse, has been listed. In 1994 he won with Pulp Fiction

Gus Van Sant, a winner in 2003 for Elephant, will compete again with Paranoid Park - about a skateboarder who kills a security guard by accident.

Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai's first English language film, My Blueberry Nights, starring Jude Law and Rachel Weisz, is also among the 20 nominees.

Several movies are also due to premiere during the event, which begins on May 16.

They include Michael Moore's Sicko, about health care in the US, and A Mighty Heart, a film about the murder of US journalist Daniel Pearl starring Angelina Jolie. She and other stars including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta Jones are expected to attend.

Giles Jacob, festival president, told a press conference in Paris: "For the anniversary we chose to mix heritage with modernity, well-known names and new blood."
