'Star Trek Into Darkness' IMAX release date moved to May 15

By
Star Trek Into Darkness will open on 3D IMAX screens two days before its May 17 wide release.

Paramount has closed a deal with the giant-screen exhibitor to show JJ Abrams's sci-fi sequel from May 15, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Star Trek Into Darkness screened its opening nine minutes before IMAX screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey last year.

IMAX Entertainment chairman and president Greg Foster said: "As we saw with the reaction to the first nine minutes of the film, which debuted in our theatres in December, fans are clearly excited by the opportunity to see this epic film come to life in IMAX."

Star Trek Into Darkness reportedly contains 30 minutes of footage filmed on IMAX cameras.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Simon Pegg and Anton Yelchin all reprise their roles from 2009's Star Trek, while Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve, Noel Clarke and Peter Weller are new additions to the cast.
