Lars von Trier's erotic drama centres on Joe (Gainsbourg), a woman who recounts her sexual history to a man (Stellan Skarsgård) after he finds her badly beaten in an alleyway.

Shia LaBeouf, Willem Dafoe, Uma Thurman and Christian Slater also feature in the cast for Nymphomaniac. Nicole Kidman, who starred in von Trier's Dogville, was initially set to star but dropped out last October.
Von Trier will reportedly release two versions of the movie: one featuring real sex scenes, and another described as "softcore".
