Takei - who played Sulu in the original Star Trek - has now spoken about Abrams to Access Hollywood, teasing that he personally prepared the filmmaker to take on both franchises.

"I showed the path to JJ," he joked, adding more seriously: "[He] came and thought out of the box [with 2009's Star Trek]."

The actor went on to suggest that Abrams made the right choice to cast younger actors like Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana in the new Star Trek movies.

"I'm glad that they cast younger people... Can you imagine Bill Shatner today bouncing around? It wouldn't have had the same feel," Takei explained.

Abrams's Star Wars Episode 7 is expected to be released in 2015, although an exact date has yet to be confirmed.

Disney has also confirmed that it will produce a series of standalone films set in the Star Wars universe, sparking speculation about movies based on Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda.
