Disney announced last week that a series of standalone films set in the Star Wars universe will be produced, aside from JJ Abrams's upcoming Episode 7.
Initial reports suggested that films based around Yoda, Han Solo and Boba Fett were being considered, but McGregor has now weighed in by revealing that he'd love to play Obi-Wan again.
"I think it's a good idea," McGregor commented to MTV News, adding: "The only bit that I could get away with doing is after the last one I made, Episode III, before Alec Guinness, there's that period where he's in the desert."
McGregor went on to suggest that the story could focus on how Obi-Wan Kenobi survived on Tatooine prior to meeting Luke Skywalker in A New Hope.
"That might be my window, there, to tell that story. I don't know what he did in the desert. We could make up some stuff," he teased.
The actor concluded: "Could be quite exciting. I'd be up for it, for sure, of course!"
Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi writer Lawrence Kasdan and X-Men: Days of Future Past's Simon Kinberg are currently working on Star Wars standalone projects.
Kasdan has said that he wants his film to "start fresh", explaining: "There are certain pleasures that we think the saga can bring to people that they've been missing, and we're hoping to bring them that, and at the same time, have them feel that it's all new."
Abrams's Star Wars Episode 7 is expected to open in 2015.
