'The Canyons': Porn actor James Deen slams director Paul Schrader

James Deen has criticised The Canyons director Paul Schrader.

Deen stars opposite Lindsay Lohan in Schrader's upcoming drama The Canyons, the troubled production of which was chronicled in a recent New York Times article.

Writing in The Daily Beast, Deen complained that Schrader had not shown respect for him throughout the shoot.

"Paul has an ego. He was described to me as a hyper-intelligent creative genius with various issues... [our producer Braxton Pope] seemed worried about me not wanting to feed Paul's ego.

"Through the whole the film, there was not one moment where I felt he respected me as a person. I did, however, feel as if he respected my acting abilities."

He nonetheless praised Schrader's talent as a director, writing: "Love him or hate him, Paul is a genius... He was my director, and I will follow him to the ends of the earth. I hope my performance was of the calibre he desired and that I did not let my director down."

Schrader responded to Deen's article via Facebook, writing: "For my part, [Deen] seems to be playing his violin a little loud. I would not cast an actor as the lead in a film I was co-financing unless I had absolute faith in his ability to pull it off.

"It took me a while to get to that place of trust (casting is destiny), but once I got there I never regretted choosing him. I took him seriously and he took his work seriously. James was the glue which held the production together."

Deen also praised Lohan in his article, explaining: "I am sick of discussing Lindsay. I am sick of people twisting words and gossiping. I can't speak for Lindsay or how she feels. I only know I didn't feel like she thought I was a joke. She made me feel good when I was around her."

The Canyons was recently rejected by the SXSW film festival over "quality issues".
