The X-Men: First Class actor has become the latest name to be connected to the new adaptation of James O'Barr's comic, reports Bloody Disgusting.
Bradley Cooper was previously connected to the role when 28 Weeks Later's Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was set to helm the film. Mark Wahlberg and Channing Tatum have also been rumoured to star in the remake.
The Crow tells the tale of Eric Draven, who is murdered along with his wife and rises from the dead to take revenge on their killers. F Javier Gutierrez was announced to be directing the movie from Jesse Wigutow screenplay last year.
The Crow was previously adapted in 1994 by Alex Proyas. Star Brandon Lee famously died during filming when he was accidentally shot on set.
McAvoy, who is currently playing Macbeth at Trafalgar Studios in London, will next be seen in Welcome to the Punch and Trance.
He is also in line to reprise his role as Professor Charles Xavier in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
