'Spider-Man 3' makes movie history?
Early estimates indicate Spider-Man 3 is the most successful new release in US box office history, its producers have declared.

According to Sony it took $148m (£74m) in its US opening weekend - beating $136m (£68m) set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest last year.

The movie follows Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as he battles with his own temptation.

It has been received well by movie-goers, but the critical response was lukewarm. It is "plain awful", according to the Washington Post and, according to the New York Post, "overly long and complicated".

Later this month Spider-Man 3 will face competition from the third Shrek release and the third Pirates of the Caribbean, called At World's End.
