The Die Hard and Lethal Weapon producer's company Silver Pictures has joined forces with StudioCanal to begin development on a potential movie trilogy based on the sci-fi action adventure, according to Deadline.
According to the report, the planned trilogy will begin with an origin movie in a similar vein to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the search for a director is already thought to be underway.
The original Escape from New York movie was released in 1981 and set in 1997. Directed and co-written by John Carpenter, it starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken.
A disgraced war hero-turned-criminal, Snake is given the chance to redeem himself by rescuing the president of the United States (Donald Pleasance), who has been taken hostage by inmates at a maximum-security prison on the island of Manhattan.
New Line Cinema were previously tipped to make a new version of Escape from New York a number of years ago, but the studio eventually dropped the project in 2011 after a protracted period of development.
At the time, Jeremy Renner, Gerard Butler and Josh Brolin were among the actors tipped to play Snake.
