Nicolas Cage on Superman Lives: 'It would have been really special'

By
Nicolas Cage has opened up about his role in Tim Burton's aborted superhero project Superman Lives.

The Ghost Rider star told MTV that the movie was well into the planning stages before the plug was pulled, and insisted the finish product would have been "really special".

He said: "The fact that Tim and I were pretty far down the road designing [Superman Lives], and I know that with Tim and where I was going to go, we would have done something really special.

"At least it's out there in the ether that that could have happened, but we don't have to make the movie. It's still interesting to people."

Cage added: "I do think that I had the win-win situation, because that character is such a bullseye that you have to hit. He's one of the most precious icons of our country."

Based on a screenplay by Kevin Smith, Superman Lives was to star Cage as a flightless incarnation of the Man of Steel in a radically different take on the character.

The script drew inspiration from the 'Death of Superman' comic book story arc, with Lex Luthor, Brainiac and Doomsday serving as its villains.

A documentary charting Superman Lives' ill-fated development is in the works from Metalocalypse director Jon Schnepp, who is appealing on Kickstarter to fund the venture.
