Christina Hendricks will star in the fantasy thriller as a single mother who is swept into a dark underworld, and Gosling revealed that it was Hendricks's death scene in Drive that inspired him to write the script.
Speaking to the New York Times, Gosling described a screening of Nicolas Winding Refn's film in which Hendricks's violent death scene was met with applause from the audience.
"The audience gave a standing ovation," he explained. "It was the strangest thing I'd ever been a part of, and in some way my movie is a bit about that experience."
Saoirse Ronan, Eva Mendes, Ben Mendelsohn and Doctor Who's Matt Smith will also star in How to Catch a Monster.
