The new image shows Pitt's UN employee Gerry Lane staring down at a devastated skyline, as a zombie pandemic grips the world.
Lost actor Matthew Fox and The Killing's Mireille Enos are among the supporting cast in the post-apocalyptic drama, which is based on Max Brooks's best-selling novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War.
Marc Foster (Quantum of Solace) is in the director's chair for the big-screen adaptation.
Pitt recently said that he had originally intended for World War Z to carry a strong political message, "using the zombie trope as a kind of Trojan horse for asking, 'What would happen to sociopolitical lines if there was a pandemic like this? Who would be on top?'"
However, the actor and producer said that during production, it became apparent that it would be "too much to explain" and detracted from "the fun of what these films are meant to be".
