Production on the series began two years ago after numerous delays. The first film An Unexpected Journey was released last year, with the sequel The Desolation of Smaug arriving in cinemas on December 13.

Jackson posted his first update at 6.30am local time with a picture of himself looking over footage in his custom "WingNut TV" iPad app.

He explained that he hopes to give fans "a feeling for what we deal with on an average day".

However, he pointed out that the final day of shooting is never an "average" one but promised to post updates whenever his schedule allowed.

Since, the director has posted a picture showing dawn over Wellington and his arrival at the studio.

The 51-year-old - who also worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy - previously marked the final days on set for long-serving actors Orlando Bloom and Sir Ian McKellen.
