The original film is Park Chan-wook's predecessor to Oldboy and the first instalment in his acclaimed Vengeance Trilogy.

It centres around a deaf-mute man who seeks revenge after being ripped off when he saved money for his sister's operation.

Abu-Assad is best known for his films depicting the Arab-Israeli conflict, such as Paradise Now and Omar. He also directed 2012's The Courier, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Mickey Rourke.

Oldboy is also being given a Hollywood makeover, with Josh Brolin in the lead role and Spike Lee directing.
