Hirsch has now told Rolling Stone that the offer to play Belushi "came up fairly recently".

"Conrad had a strong vision and I feel like I just fit into that," he said. "Then I read the material and really responded to it. Everything about it is interesting."

The actor added that he is currently trying to learn more about the comedian's life.

"I was familiar with him, but I'm getting more familiar," the star explained. "He was a little bit before my time, so there's an educational process in there.

"It's exciting to present this guy to a generation of comedy fans who may not be too knowledgeable about his work. We're trying to do him justice."

Wired - a previous film about Belushi based on Bob Woodward's book - was released in 1989 and starred Michael Chiklis as the comic.

That film was met with a negative reaction from Belushi's family and friends.
