The series will be based directly on the eight books of Thomas Mallory's 15th century classic Le Morte d'Arthur.

Ritchie was previously developing an Excalibur remake in 2010. X-Men director Bryan Singer also took a stab at the property for Warner, but neither project ever got off the ground.

Warner's most recent attempt to revive the legend was David Dobkin's Arthur & Lancelot, which tapped Colin Farrell to star but was cancelled over budgetary concerns.

Ritchie has most recently been working on a remake of The Man from UNCLE, which will star Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer, Alicia Vikander and Hugh Grant.
