The Oscar-winning actor will star as the iconic Nobel Peace Prize-winner in a film adaptation of John Carlin's novel The Human Factor: Nelson Mandela and the Game that Changed the World.
The film will tell the story of how Mandela used the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa to break down racial barriers.
Freeman, who will also produce the film, told Variety: "I have known Nelson Mandela personally for quite some time, and am continually in awe of his enormous presence in the world. The opportunity to portray him in this film is a great honour."
